TESTIMONIALS from our members

“Since joining local 21 I have received medical benefits as long as I stayed working. I also occasionally received overtime opportunities. I have been a member for almost 3 years.

I’ve worked for a non-union shop for a little over a year prior to joining local 21. The most beneficial changes were the medical benefits as well as a fixed, and raising pay rate. Another big benefit was the ability to attend the training school and learn more about the trades of plumbing and steam fitting as well as welding.

I would highly recommend a non-union worker to join Local 21 for all the above reasons. In addition and not to be understated, it is a great brotherhood where I have worked with and met some great people who look out for one another.

It let me know there are others in the workforce that actually care about another's well-being and livelihood. To work alongside individuals that have similar drives in life is something that can you can not put a price on.”

“There are a few beneficial areas when it comes to Union vs non-Union. The biggest one is management. In the private sector, management plays one of the most important roles when it comes to happiness in the workplace.

Another huge factor is benefits and pay raise (I was stuck on a contract annual pay raise with a company that granted me a $.45/hour pay raise after my first year of working; not even $1 and the 401k plan provided was your own money with no company contributions). I am treated better Union than I was non-Union.

It all boils down to happiness in the workplace.

Many are happy with the management of certain companies, pay scale, 401k plan, health benefits, etc with non-Union companies. That is really what it boils down to. With Union, that is part of the package deal and we as brothers and sisters are what maintain the health management system (ie Supers, General Foremen, Foremen, Journeymen, etc).”

“Local 21 has provided me with pretty steady work for almost 18 years. Also annuity, pension, HRA. Benefits that I did not have before I became a 21 member. I’ve been a member for 17 1/2 years. With missing 2 pension credits. Missing one in 2009 when the market tanked. And another this year 2021 due to an injury. I worked non union for 10 years 6 years in FL where my pay was peanuts and worked like a dog in the blazing heat. I work 4 years non union in NY where again the pay was not enough to support a family.

The most beneficial changes since I became a 21 member in 2004 is the pay scale which is about 4 times more than my highest pay non-union. The health benefits are great for my family. The pension and annuity are getting pretty large numbers for retirement. HRA health reimbursement assistant has saved me several time. Vacation checks are great. And working with a lot of very skilled Plumbers and Steamfitters has also taught me a lot of skills non union didn’t offer.

I would recommend a non-union plumber-steam fitter to join a local union 100%. The benefits, payscale, pension, annuity, HRA, vacation checks are all things I wasn’t offered as a non-union worker. And the craftsmanship is no comparison. Also the people you get to work with along the way. I’ve made a lot of tight bonds with my 21 brothers and sisters. There’s really no comparison. Union is the way to go for myself.”
